In Loy’s community in Uganda, raising animals is a vital way for families to earn a living. At 75 years old, Loy is a widow and the mother of three adult children. Though she lives with ongoing pain in her back and legs that makes walking difficult, she has found a steady source of income—and a way to care for her health—through raising goats.
Nearly two decades ago, World Renew, together with its partner Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) – North Teso, began supporting goat-rearing initiatives in Loy’s region. Goats are a practical and sustainable resource for households facing food insecurity. Their milk provides nourishment and can be sold for income, while their manure enriches soil for growing crops. Because goats reproduce quickly—often giving birth to twins or even triplets—they can help families expand their livelihoods over time.
Through this project, Loy received a goat along with training. When her goat gave birth for the first time, she was overjoyed to welcome triplets. As part of the programme’s approach, she passed one young goat on to another member of her group, helping extend the opportunity to others. Over time, as her herd grew, Loy sold some goats and invested in two cows.
Today, Loy owns several goats and cows. She lives in a three-bedroom home she built with her late husband, and the income from her animals has helped her cover medical expenses and support her family. It enabled her to send her children to school, and now she is helping pay for her grandchildren’s education.
Stories like Loy’s reflect the lasting impact of practical, community-based support. With access to training and resources, even small beginnings—like a single goat—can grow into sustainable livelihoods that restore dignity, independence, and hope.
As you reflect on Loy’s journey, may it also be a reminder to pray for communities working toward stability and resilience—that families would have the resources they need to thrive, that those facing hardship would find strength and support, and that local organisations and staff serving alongside them would be equipped with wisdom, health, and perseverance.
