Neglected Crises: Food Assistance in Burkina Faso

Ongoing insecurity in Burkina Faso continues to force families from their homes, cutting them off from land, livestock, and livelihoods they once relied on. Armed attacks in the country’s northern regions have displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and many now live in crowded host communities with limited access to food and income.

Through local partner Christian Relief and Development Organization (CREDO), and with support from Canadian Foodgrains Bank, World Renew is helping families by providing food assistance in Burkina Faso during this prolonged crisis.

Renewing Hope through Food Assistance in Burkina Faso

Haoua is one of those affected by the crisis in Burkina Faso. The 40-year-old mother is the head of a household of 21 people. In 2018, armed groups attacked her village, stealing nearly all of her family’s livestock. “It was like a nightmare,” Haoua says. “The children were traumatized, and suddenly everything we depended on was gone.”

Before fleeing, Haoua’s family depended on farming to survive. Displacement has changed everything.

“We left without any means of subsistence. Once self-sufficient, today we are dependent,” she explains. “Here, we can’t farm because there is no space.”

Food assistance in Burkina Faso provided through CREDO has brought relief to vulnerable families like Haoua’s. The distribution of flour in particular has eased some daily pressure on Haoua’s household, saving both time and money.

“I no longer have to pay milling costs or travel to process grain,” Haoua shares. “No one is stopping us from taking the flour to cook. If it were grain, it would be difficult. It helps a lot, especially for the elderly.”

While the assistance has helped stabilize her family’s food situation, Haoua continues to hope for a return home. “I pray that we can return to our village and resume our agricultural activities,” she says.
