Years of unpredictable weather—long droughts followed by intense rains—have left millions of families across Central America’s “dry corridor” struggling to access enough food. For mothers and young children, the impact is especially severe. Hunger and uncertainty threaten daily wellbeing and long‑term health, making good nutrition not just important, but essential.
Vilma Lezama understands this reality firsthand. A mother herself, Vilma serves as a preventative health volunteer with one of World Renew’s local partners. In her community, she walks alongside families by providing nutrition and health education to mothers and carefully monitoring the growth and wellbeing of children from birth to age five.
Supporting Mothers and Children at the Start of Life
In Honduras—and in other countries where World Renew supports maternal and child health programs—mothers and children receive access to nutrition essentials such as vitamins, medicines, and soybeans to make soy milk when other milk options are not available. These resources help ensure steady, nourishing diets that support healthy pregnancies and give young children a strong foundation during their earliest years.
Alongside nutrition education, Vilma has learned how to establish aquaponics systems that raise fish and vegetables together in a self‑sustaining cycle. She now shares this knowledge with other mothers in her village, helping families grow food close to home.
“We also promote gardens, so that mothers can produce part of their food at home,” Vilma explains. “I feel proud and grateful to God for my harvests. I am hopeful and relieved.”
A Difference That Lasts for Generations
Vilma’s story is echoed by many others. When World Renew’s partner first met Maira more than twenty‑five years ago, she was pregnant and lacked the nutrition needed for a healthy pregnancy. Through access to essential nutrition support, Maira was able to carry her daughter, Marie, to full term.
Today, Maira is passing that knowledge on. She teaches Marie—and Marie’s own three children—how to farm using aquaponics, equipping the next generation with practical skills to feed their families and build resilience for years to come.
Vilma, Maira, and thousands of other mothers around the world participating in World Renew’s maternal and child health programs illustrate the lasting impact of good nutrition. What begins with vitamins, healthy food, and practical training can grow into confidence, stability, and hope—changing not just individual lives, but entire communities.
