Globally, 1 in 3 women are subjected to gender-based violence (GBV), which includes physical, verbal, and sexual abuse. For women living with disabilities, this violence can too often go unnoticed or unreported. In Nigeria, the Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre, in collaboration with World Renew, hosted an advocacy seminar to amplify awareness of GBV and its impact on people with disabilities. The goal was to increase understanding and ensure that those affected have access to meaningful support.

The room was filled with individuals who have faced similar struggles, each sharing their experiences and drawing strength from one another. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to come together in a safe and supportive space. Many left feeling affirmed, empowered, and ready to become advocates within their own communities.

“I now feel equipped to not only protect myself but also to help others who might be going through similar experiences,” one participant shared.

Education plays a crucial role in addressing gender-based violence, especially when it comes to understanding the heightened vulnerability faced by women with disabilities. When more people are informed, communities become stronger and more inclusive—better equipped to recognize abuse, respond appropriately, and support those affected. It is not only about identifying the problem, but also knowing where to find help and how to access it.

During the seminar, participants were connected with local resources and support networks they can turn to in times of need. These connections are vital in ensuring that individuals are not left to navigate difficult situations alone. Creating spaces like this—where people can learn, share, and support one another—helps build confidence and fosters a growing movement of awareness and advocacy.

As more individuals become informed and empowered, that knowledge spreads outward, reaching families, neighbours, and even the most remote communities. Each conversation, each shared experience, and each act of advocacy contributes to a broader culture of safety and dignity.

Together, we can help create a world where everyone—regardless of ability or circumstance—can live free from fear and violence. By continuing to listen, learn, and stand alongside one another, we take meaningful steps toward a more just, compassionate, and inclusive future.
