Nenpin, 33, and her husband, Joel, live with their four children in Gochom, a small village in Nigeria. Because of ongoing poverty, neither of them was able to complete primary school, and with limited opportunities, the couple turned to subsistence farming to support their family.
In 2022, when she became pregnant for the fourth time, Nenpin feared experiencing the same serious complications she had faced in her previous pregnancies and births. During her first trimester, World Renew’s local partner, Beacon of Hope Initiative (BHI), began a Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MCNH) program in her community focused on prenatal care, and she was eager to join.
“My husband and I had never heard of prenatal care,” Nenpin says. “The Lord has been merciful to me by not allowing the same difficulties that happened with my first three children to happen again. The program taught me all that I needed to know about a healthy pregnancy and childcare.”
Through the program, Nenpin learned how to care for herself and followed key recommendations, including limiting strenuous work, taking vitamins, and attending scheduled ultrasounds. For the first time, she also gave birth at a health facility—an experience that felt both new and reassuring.
“I was determined to do everything that I was taught to make sure that my baby would be healthy, and thank God it has been a success,” she shares. “My baby is three months old now, and we have not needed the clinic except for immunizations. This is all thanks to BHI, the facilitators of the MCNH program. I pray that the good Lord will sustain this program.”
Stories like Nenpin’s are a reminder of the impact that accessible health education and care can have for families. Even in regions facing hardship and instability, local partners continue to walk alongside communities with practical support and hope.
Please join us in giving thanks for these efforts, praying for continued stability and peace in the region, and asking for wisdom and strength for those working to improve maternal and child health so that families can flourish.
