Honduras: Navigating the Hunger Crisis

In Honduras, World Renew, in partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, is supporting Comisión de Acción Social Menonita (CASM) to respond to the country’s ongoing hunger crisis. Together, they are providing five months of food parcels to 1,706 people in Intibucá and Yamaranguila, along with monthly e-vouchers valued at $35 CAD for 625 people in Dolores.

We spoke with World Renew Honduras, CASM staff, and a program participant about how this initiative is strengthening food security and supporting families.

Challenges Facing Communities

Q: What are the issues people are facing in Intibucá where you’re working?

A: Most families experiencing poverty in Intibucá depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. The region has a significant Indigenous Lenca population, many of whom rely on farming and handicrafts.
Poverty, marginalization, and gender inequality intensify food insecurity—particularly for women. Access to quality agricultural inputs, financing, infrastructure, knowledge, and market information remains limited, reducing productivity and income opportunities. Climate change, including increasingly extreme weather events, continues to disrupt food production. At the same time, rising prices make it even harder for families to meet their basic needs, often forcing them to adopt harmful coping strategies.

Motivation Behind the Work

Q: What encourages you to do this work?

A: I am motivated by knowing that my work can help transform lives and create a positive impact in communities.
— Olga Ordoñez, CASM project officer

A: I find a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction in contributing to the well-being of those who need it most.
— Marlene Chinchilla, CASM regional office director

Impact on Families

Q: What difference has this assistance made for your family’s food security?

A: I received a voucher that allowed me to buy food at a nearby shop. This support was a tremendous blessing because I didn’t have the means to purchase food otherwise. Before, I could only afford a small amount of rice. Now, I can prepare more complete meals for my children and ensure they are well nourished. I’ve also been able to improve my own nutrition and maintain my health. It has truly been a blessing.
— Maria Herrera, program participant

Together, these efforts reflect the resilience of Honduran communities and the strength of partnerships working to support them. While challenges remain, initiatives like this are helping families meet their immediate needs and build a more hopeful, food-secure future.
