Hope After Heartbreak in Haiti

November 12, 2021
Haitian community gathering under a large tree for support and hope.

In June 2021, bullets flew and bystanders were killed as armed gangs clashed in Martissant, Haiti. Like so many other families, Monique, 46, and her four children were forced to flee their home to escape the violence. After spending time in an evacuation facility, they eventually made the difficult journey south to Morcou. Safety came at a cost.

“I spent days looking for food and other essential items for my children,” Monique shared.

Just weeks later, hardship struck again.

Holding On Through Loss and Uncertainty

On August 14, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked Haiti. Once more, Monique found herself without a home. Her house in Morcou was among an estimated 130,000 homes destroyed or damaged. The losses were overwhelming—shelter, stability, and the means to provide daily food.

“No house in Martissant, no house in Morcou now and no livelihood to provide at least for our daily bread,” Monique lamented. “I am one hundred percent depending on God’s mercies.”

Living in a remote area added to her fear. “[Morcou] is hardly accessible; organizations [won’t] reach here,” she worried. “It will require difficult trudging…no one [will] distribute aid to affected families.” Yet even in deep uncertainty, Monique held firmly to her faith, praying that God would care for her children when the path forward felt impossible to see.

Help Reaching the Hardest Places

In the aftermath of the earthquake, World Renew was able to reach families displaced by disaster and violence—including those in hard-to-access communities like Morcou. Through local partnerships and on-the-ground teams, emergency food, tarps for shelter, seeds, and water purification tablets were distributed to 3,110 affected families.

For Monique, this support came as an unexpected answer to prayer. “I never expected World Renew staff to [come to] Morcou,” she said. “We are so grateful.”

Her story is one of loss, resilience, and hope—hope rooted not in circumstances, but in God’s provision working through people who refused to overlook those living at the margins.

A Shared Call to Compassion

Around the world, families continue to face displacement caused by conflict, disaster, and poverty. Monique’s story invites us to remember those whose suffering often goes unseen, yet whose faith endures.

Pray for families in Haiti and elsewhere who are rebuilding after crisis—especially those in remote or forgotten places—that they may have daily food, safe shelter, and renewed hope. And if you feel called, explore ways to walk alongside communities like Monique’s as they work toward restoration, resilience, and a future rooted in dignity.

Together, we can help ensure that hope reaches even the hardest places.
