Deysi Vaquedano lives in the Flor del Campo community in Honduras with her husband, Nelson, and their two children, Anderson and Modesto. The family participates in the Strong Communities program facilitated by World Renew’s local partner, Asociación para una Sociedad más Justa (ASJ).
After noticing a lump in one of her breasts, Deysi initially hoped it would go away on its own. However, everything changed when she attended a Strong Communities meeting where medical students shared information about the early detection of breast cancer and the importance of seeking care if a suspicious lump is found. Encouraged by what she learned, Deysi decided not to ignore the warning signs and visited her nearby community health centre. She was quickly referred to San Felipe Hospital, where she was scheduled for a biopsy.
The cost of medical visits and testing weighed heavily on Deysi. Her family already struggled to meet daily needs, and she felt overwhelmed by the expense of the procedure. When she shared her fears with staff from the Strong Communities program, they stepped in to help cover the cost of the surgery. Soon after, Deysi received the good news: the results were negative—she did not have breast cancer.
“God is my rock, my strength, and my Saviour. We must always trust that he is working on our behalf, even when we are going through times of tribulation,” Deysi shared.
Reflecting on her experience, she added, “If I had not joined the Strong Communities program, I would not have received that information or the financial and emotional support to go through with the biopsy. Many times I doubted, and I felt afraid and alone, but we believe that everything God does has a purpose. My family trusts that he will continue to bless us.”
Deysi’s story is a reminder of how access to knowledge, community support, and compassionate care can transform fear into hope. It also speaks to the deeper assurance that even in uncertainty, God is present and at work. As communities across Latin America face ongoing challenges—from limited healthcare access to economic hardship—may stories like Deysi’s encourage faith, resilience, and a renewed trust in God’s provision and purpose.
