Twenty‑one‑year‑old Yamikani Mose will never forget the night his family’s house collapsed. He was sleeping in the kitchen—a small, dilapidated, grass‑thatched room—when termite‑damaged walls gave way. The collapse left him with an injury to his left eye and a fractured hip.
Getting Yamikani to medical care was difficult. The nearest hospital was 40 kilometres from his home, and his elderly parents were already struggling to meet their family’s basic needs. Covering treatment costs and supporting Yamikani during recovery felt overwhelming.
Stepping In Together
Support came through World Renew’s local partner, Word Alive Ministry, as church and community members rallied around the family. The church helped ensure Yamikani received the medical care he needed and assisted with essential expenses such as food, crutches, and groceries. After he was discharged from hospital, that support continued, helping the family meet daily needs while Yamikani healed.
Community members also joined together to repair the family’s damaged house, restoring a sense of stability and safety at a time when it was desperately needed.
Building for the Future
To help strengthen the family over the long term, World Renew partnered with church leaders to support Yamikani’s livelihood. He received start‑up capital and a bicycle to begin a small‑scale business selling cassava and fresh maize.
Today, Yamikani has fully recovered. The income from his business allows him not only to support himself, but also to care for his parents.
“I am thankful to the church and all members of the community for the support they provided during the time I was in hospital and after being discharged,” he said. “I will be supporting other people who are in need using some of the profits I get from my business.”
Stories like Yamikani’s highlight how locally rooted support—through churches, neighbours, and trusted partners—can lead to healing, restored dignity, and lasting change.
