World Renew gives thanks to God for generous supporters around the world who help equip communities to build resilient futures. Because of this shared compassion, hope is taking root in places like a rural village in southern Malawi—home to Christopher and his family.
Adapting to a Changing Climate
Each year, Christopher’s village prepares its fields in anticipation of the rains. But shifting weather patterns have made farming increasingly unpredictable. Some seasons bring floods; others bring prolonged dry periods. Too often, these extremes have destroyed crops before they could be harvested.
In March 2019, Tropical Cyclone Idai swept across southern Africa, hitting Malawi hard. Crops were wiped out, and farming families like Christopher’s were left without a way to generate income or meet their basic needs.
Christopher struggled to afford food and to pay his children’s school fees. He felt overwhelmed and afraid for what the future might hold.
Cultivating Resilience and Renewed Hope
Through World Renew, a permaculture site was established in Christopher’s village. There, he saw gardens flourishing—even before the rains arrived. He noticed trenches and trees designed to slow floodwaters and protect the soil. He also learned new ways of raising animals, including how animal waste could be used in fish ponds and compost to nourish the land.
That experience changed something for Christopher. He began to believe that his family could not only survive, but thrive.
Today, he welcomes World Renew field staff with a smile and a readiness to learn more about improving his crop yields. His smile reflects renewed hope—rooted in practical skills, restored confidence, and a vision for the future.
Thank you for being part of stories like Christopher’s.
