Urthuan’s early years were marked by loss and uncertainty. After his parents separated, he went to live with his grandfather, a carpenter who became his primary caregiver. Not long after, Urthuan’s mother passed away.
Living with an intellectual disability, Urthuan faced additional barriers. He did not begin attending a school for children with learning difficulties until the age of ten, and he struggled to connect with classmates much younger than himself. By the time he reached Grade 5 at age 18, continuing in formal education no longer felt possible.
His grandfather, with limited resources and support, was unsure how to help him move forward.
A Path Toward Growth
That’s when Urthuan’s teachers introduced him to the BEN Therapy program, offered through a nearby church. Facilitated by World Renew’s local partner, the United Church of Zambia, the program supports people living with disabilities by focusing on their unique abilities and potential.
In this environment, Urthuan experienced something new: encouragement instead of ridicule. With the support of therapists, he began to grow in confidence. Over time, he made significant progress in both communication and behaviour.
After two years in the program, Urthuan was selected to attend Chipembe Farm College. There, he learned practical agricultural skills that not only built his independence but also allowed him to contribute in meaningful ways at home.
Strength, Skills, and Hope
Today, Urthuan is sharing what he has learned with his grandfather, teaching him how to grow crops on their land. His grandfather reflects on the transformation: “The college has helped Urthuan to open his mind, and to learn so many things he didn’t know.”
Urthuan takes pride in the role he now plays in his family. “I am happy,” he says, “because I know a lot and I am able to assist my grandfather.”
His journey is a reminder that with the right support and opportunities, people can discover their strengths, build confidence, and create new possibilities for themselves and their communities.
