In God’s call to us for a ministry of mercy and justice (Micah 6:8), World Renew joins all Canadians in observing September 30, the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is designated for all to lament the atrocities that occurred in residential schools across Canada—atrocities whose impacts and injustices continue to this day.
Recognizing that the majority of Canadians are settlers on land that was home to Indigenous peoples, it is especially important that we stand in solidarity with those who graciously shared this place and who have faced oppression in the past and in the present.
How We Are Called to Reflect and Act
World Renew staff in Canada will be remembering this day through activities of reflection and learning and encourage all members of our community to do the same. Below are some resources you can explore to reflect, learn, and engage in advocacy:
- National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
- Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: 94 Calls to Action
- Personal guided reflection, prayer, and church resources
This call to participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a call to love our Indigenous brothers and sisters and to pursue reconciliation and healing in our relationships. We would love to hear from you if you have found particular activities helpful in your efforts to remember this day or to commit to longer-term action and advocacy—working toward changing the narrative from colonial oppression to one body and one nation.
May God bless each of our efforts to become the beloved community God created us to be.
