Moustapha never imagined he would be forced to abandon his land, home, and livelihood at nearly 60 years old.
This ongoing Burkina Faso crisis is part of a growing number of neglected crises around the world.
Across northern Burkina Faso, violence and armed attacks have displaced hundreds of thousands of families in recent years. After an attack on his own community, Moustapha says life became โbrutally disrupted.โ He and his householdโincluding two wives, five children, and a daughter-in-lawโleft their community to seek safety elsewhere. The family fled multiple times before settling in Oula, where they lived for four years marked by fear and uncertainty.
When Moustapha returned to his hometown in December 2025, instability continued to shape his everyday life. Ongoing risks forced his family to separate, with some of his family members remaining in Oula for safety. The emotional strain of the separation has weighed heavily on his well-being.
Responding to the Burkina Faso Crisis
In Burkina Faso, World Renew is working through our local partner, Christian Relief and Development Organization (CREDO), to help families like Moustaphaโs. With funding support from Canadian Foodgrains Bank, CREDO is providing food assistance for families affected by this prolonged crisis.
In this fragile context, the support has been a lifeline for Moustapha. He received food kits containing maize flour, rice, beans, oil, and saltโready-to-eat staples that eased both hunger and stress. โKnowing that I will have the same amount of food for three months has given me great joy,โ Moustapha shares. โI can rest during this period, because food is guaranteed.โ
The food assistance offers more than nourishmentโit restores dignity, reduces anxiety, and helps people like Moustapha hold onto hope while they wait for more stable days.
