An after-school program is providing a beacon of hope for youth in Chimanimani Township, Zambia. In a community facing high unemployment, limited access to education, and frequent substance abuse, a local coach founded the Bupilo Sports Academy in 2007 with the goal of fostering discipline, teamwork, and positive life choices.
The academy is built on four foundational pillars: education, sports, spiritual growth, and entrepreneurship. Through regular training sessions and team-building activities, young people are encouraged to adopt healthier lifestyles, grow in personal responsibility, and deepen their sense of purpose. This holistic approach has helped cultivate a culture of respect and equality among both participants and mentors.
“I joined the academy because it keeps me fit and helps me stay away from bad influences in our community,” says Eunice Lumpa, a Grade 11 student.
In 2023, World Renew’s local partner, the United Church of Zambia (UCZ), began working alongside the academy to promote gender justice and strengthen awareness of child safeguarding standards. UCZ’s involvement has reinforced the academy’s values and contributed to meaningful progress in advancing gender equality.
Participants are gaining the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves from harmful practices, make informed decisions, and pursue responsible lifestyles. As the academy continues to grow, maintaining strong child safeguarding measures and promoting gender equality remain key priorities.
“Gender justice isn’t just a women’s issue; it’s a societal necessity. It taught me that real change starts with challenging my own biases and standing up for others,” says 18-year-old Faith Banda.
Looking ahead, Bupilo Sports Academy aims to expand its reach by partnering with additional local and international organizations. Together with UCZ, the academy continues to inspire hope and nurture a brighter future for young people in the Chimanimani community. Their journey is a powerful testament to the impact of community support, dedicated leadership, and the transformative potential of sport.
