Tanzania: The Value of One Grain of Corn

An agricultural training initiative is transforming lives and livelihoods in a farming community in Tanzania. Introduced by World Renew’s local partner, this conservation agriculture program goes beyond traditional farming methods by integrating food security with sustainable livelihood opportunities. The approach has sparked many remarkable success stories, including that of 45-year-old Mayunga Ndongo.

For years, Mayunga struggled to provide for his family of eleven with limited harvests. After adopting conservation agriculture principles, his experience changed dramatically. In just two years, his yield grew from only a few sacks of corn to an abundant harvest of 28 sacks from his two-acre farm.

When he faced the challenge of storing his increased production, support came through the Kilimo Hifadhi group—a network of farmers in his community who train together. Through this group, Mayunga accessed shared storage solutions that protect his crops and help secure his family’s future.

At the heart of Mayunga’s success is a deeper understanding of the value within a single grain of corn. By learning to optimize seed performance, he has increased crop yields while improving soil health and preserving biodiversity. This commitment to stewardship not only boosts productivity but also strengthens resilience against environmental challenges.

“Nowadays, I am not ready to lose even a single grain because I know its importance,” Mayunga says. “That one grain brings hundreds of other seeds!”

Looking ahead, Mayunga is exploring opportunities to add value to his harvest beyond meeting his family’s immediate needs. By doing so, he hopes to increase the market value of his produce and further strengthen his household’s food security.

Mayunga’s story reflects the resilience and resourcefulness of farming communities around the world. It also highlights the impact of locally led, sustainable agricultural training that equips farmers with the knowledge and tools to thrive.

Through programs like this, World Renew continues to partner with communities globally to improve food security, strengthen livelihoods, and promote environmental stewardship. By investing in people and in the potential of something as small as a single grain of corn, these efforts are helping cultivate lasting change—one harvest, one household, and one community at a time.
