High in the hills of northern Laos, Kham Ann and Lien have built a life together in a close‑knit community. As members of the Lao Seng tribe, they provide for their family according to the rhythm of the seasons, just as families in this village have done for generations.
Life Rooted in Tradition—and Challenge
Life in these remote hills is deeply connected to the land, but it also comes with significant challenges. Traditional methods of rice farming can lead to soil erosion, making it difficult for families to harvest enough rice to last through the season. Access to proper nutrition, clean water, health care, education, and reliable income opportunities is limited.
Drug addiction adds another heavy burden. Opium and methamphetamines ensnare many people in a painful cycle that affects entire families—including Kham Ann’s own mother, Kheo.
“World Renew has been sharing with us how drug addiction will not allow us to develop and have better lives,” Kham Ann says. “We need to cut drugs from our lives.”
Breaking the Cycle
With support from World Renew, Kheo was able to enter a drug treatment program and receive care for her opium addiction. After completing the program, she returned to her village healthy and determined to begin a new chapter.
Her journey has brought renewed hope to her family and community—showing what is possible when people are given the opportunity to heal and rebuild their lives.
