Bee Xiong lives with his wife and children on a small farm in Laos, where they raise chickens and grow sugarcane. In the past, Bee cared for his chickens using traditional methods passed down from his parents. Chicks foraged for food in the village or nearby forest, and vaccinations were not used. As a result, many chicks did not survive, and the chickens that did grow often produced few eggs.
In Bee’s Hmong village of Kornod, World Renew Laos introduced a training program focused on raising healthy chickens. Through this initiative, families learned practical techniques for feeding, housing, and caring for chickens—helping them produce nutritious meat and eggs for household consumption or for sale in local markets. Bee chose to take part in the program and received 12 chickens to get started.
Inspired by what he learned, Bee changed the way he raised his chickens. He began feeding them regularly, following a vaccination schedule, and maintaining a clean coop. He also started observing his chickens more closely, ensuring they had consistent access to water, quality feed, and a safe environment. Over time, caring for his flock became something he truly enjoyed.
Within six months, Bee saw significant improvements. His chickens were healthier and began laying eggs regularly. Today, he is raising more than 30 chicks in addition to the original 12 chickens he received through the program. With these changes, Bee has strengthened his family’s food security and created new opportunities to earn income.
Looking ahead, Bee hopes to expand his chicken coop and continue growing his small farm. He also welcomes neighbours and other community members to visit, share experiences, and learn from one another—helping spread knowledge that benefits the wider community.
