Finding Strength in the Community

Grace Anyam struggled to meet her family’s most basic needs. She could not afford enough food, clothing for her children, or medical care when illness struck. School fees and books were often out of reach, and without money to invest in her farm, increasing her harvest felt impossible. Over time, the weight of these challenges left Grace feeling hopeless about her family’s future.

That began to change when Grace joined a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) in Nigeria. The group was supported by World Renew’s local partner, the Ecumenical Centre for Justice and Peace (ECJP), and it offered Grace not just financial opportunity, but renewed confidence and a sense of belonging.

Growing Opportunity Through Shared Savings

Members of the VSLA pool their savings together, allowing the group to gradually build a shared fund. As the savings grow, members can access low-interest loans to invest in their livelihoods. Grace was able to take out a loan to improve her farm, which led to increased yields and greater income.

“Membership in the group has impacted my entire life,” Grace says. “I can now afford medical bills, pay for my children’s school fees, and buy books for them.”

Beyond financial support, the VSLA helped Grace develop basic business and money management skills—tools that continue to benefit her household and strengthen her long-term resilience.

Strength Beyond Finances

Grace’s experience with the VSLA also nurtured her personal and spiritual life. Group meetings included times of Bible study and prayer, which she carried into her home.

“I took this practice of studying the word of God and praying to my family,” she shares. “This has helped me to discipline my children spiritually and morally.”

Perhaps most meaningful for Grace has been the sense of community she found within the group. When she lost her husband, fellow members stood alongside her in grief and support.

“When I lost my husband, the group mourned with me and was very supportive,” Grace says. “Their love and solidarity meant a lot to me and I will forever be a member of the group.”

Grace’s story reflects how community-based savings groups can help people move beyond survival toward stability, dignity, and hope—strengthening lives not only economically, but socially and spiritually as well.
