COVID-19 presented many challenges around the world, but it also created opportunities for creativity, resilience, and growth. In Bangladesh, community food security became a priority as families faced lost income and economic uncertainty.
Through one of World Renew’s partners in Bangladesh, members of the Ku-Chalsan Federation received training in leadership, literacy, health, and income-generating activities. Equipped with new skills and knowledge, federation members put their learning into action to strengthen community food security and help their neighbours navigate the challenges of the pandemic.
Building Community Food Security During COVID-19
When COVID-19 lockdowns began in 2020, many people were unable to work, and weekly savings became irregular. In response to the growing needs in their community, 15 federation members launched an initiative to cultivate ginger along with vegetables such as pumpkins, beans, and carrots.
The project provided both immediate and long-term benefits. The vegetables were harvested and distributed to 35 families who had lost income due to COVID-19, helping improve access to nutritious food while strengthening community food security during a difficult season.
Neighbours Supporting Neighbours
As one of the family members supported by the initiative, Akhilbandhu Sanjib* shared:
“This federation has helped my family in our time of need, and they did it out of their love.”
The Ku-Chalsan Federation members plan to continue working together to overcome challenges in their community. Once the ginger crop is harvested, profits will be reinvested to expand the federation’s income-generating activities and create additional opportunities to support local families.
Sanjib is one of many who are grateful for the federation’s efforts.
“I thank God for them and pray that he continues to bless this federation and all that they are doing.”
Growing Hope for the Future
Stories like this demonstrate how local leadership, agricultural training, and community collaboration can create lasting change. By investing in farming initiatives and income-generating opportunities, communities can strengthen their resilience, improve livelihoods, and build a more secure future for families facing hardship.
World Renew partners with communities around the world to improve community food security, helping families access nutritious food, develop sustainable sources of income, and adapt to ongoing challenges. These locally led solutions create lasting impact by addressing both immediate needs and the root causes of hunger, contributing to global efforts to achieve Zero Hunger (Sustainable Development Goal 2).
