Uganda: A Community’s Journey to Flourishing

Like many farmers in rural Uganda, Monday Justus purchased his potato seed at the local market. He worked hard planting and tending his crop, yet season after season he struggled with low yields. Without access to reliable agricultural guidance, he didn’t know how to improve his harvest or increase his income, and meeting his family’s basic needs was an ongoing challenge.

Learning to Care for the Land

That changed when Monday had the opportunity to take part in conservation agriculture training in his community, facilitated by World Renew through its local partner, Pentecostal Assemblies of God. Alongside other farmers, Monday joined a learning group focused on practices that would strengthen their crops while also protecting and restoring their soil.

Together, they explored techniques such as using mulch to retain moisture and cover crops to improve soil health. These environmentally friendly approaches helped farmers better understand the land they depended on and how thoughtful stewardship could lead to long‑term resilience.

A Harvest That Changed Everything

The impact was significant. By applying conservation agriculture methods and using improved Irish potato seed, the farmers harvested a total of 2,600 kilograms—an enormous increase from previous seasons. Of the 19 bags they produced, 14 were sold at the local market for a strong return, while the remainder provided food for their families.

This success set in motion a new cycle of confidence and possibility. Monday now serves as the chairperson of the farmers’ group and carries fresh hope for his family, neighbours, and the wider community. Reflecting on the change, he says, “I give many thanks to World Renew and its partner because our prayers have been answered and all our problems concerning Irish potato growing are being solved.”

Monday’s story is one example of how access to knowledge, community collaboration, and care for creation can help families move beyond survival toward flourishing—one harvest at a time.
