At Hope College’s Indigenous Peoples’ Lecture on October 23, 2025, Carol Bremer-Bennett, World Renew’s U.S. Executive Director, offered a powerful reflection on belonging, identity, and the ways we carry and use influence. Speaking on the theme “The Power We Carry,” Carol invited attendees into a meaningful conversation about how individuals and communities can intentionally nurture spaces where everyone is known, valued, and welcomed.
Rooted in identity, belonging, and relationship
Drawing deeply from her Navajo heritage, Christian faith, and lived experience, Carol’s message centred on a simple but profound truth: “You are worthy of belonging.” Through personal stories and cultural insights, she explored the significance of connection to land, community, and identity, highlighting the sacredness of relationships that sustain and shape us.
Her reflections on the meaning of “home,” grounded in the imagery of sacred mountains and shared spaces, offered a powerful vision of what it looks like to live in right relationship with one another. This vision reflects World Renew’s approach to faith and community engagement, where flourishing is rooted in mutual care and connection.
Using influence to foster justice and inclusion
At the heart of the lecture was an invitation to consider how power and influence can be employed for good. Carol challenged participants to reflect on how they might use their roles, voices, and opportunities to create environments of belonging, especially for those who have been marginalized or excluded.
Her message aligns with World Renew’s commitment to advocacy for justice and inclusion and the work of building communities marked by dignity, respect, and shared responsibility. It also reflects broader efforts to equip churches and community leaders to live out faith in tangible ways.
Continuing the work of belonging and shared power
Carol’s message resonated deeply with participants, offering both encouragement and challenge. It served as a reminder that belonging is not passive—it is cultivated through intentional relationships, shared responsibility, and a commitment to justice.
