It is with heavy hearts that we share that Melissa Yakubu, Regional Safeguarding and Social Inclusion Coordinator for the West Africa Ministry Team, died June 15, 2026. Melissa went home to be with the Lord following a medical procedure. She is survived by her husband and two daughters.

Melissa joined World Renew in 2021 and served faithfully in West Africa throughout her time with the organization. Her commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and the dignity of all people reflected Christ’s love in both word and action. She served in World Renew with professionalism, commitment, and care, particularly through her work in safeguarding, capacity strengthening, and support to teams and partners.

Melissa’s calming presence was a deep comfort to the teams that she worked with. Always pushing forward, Melissa included elements of her trauma healing background into all she did, helping us all value the importance of making a place for everyone to be safe and valued. She wasn’t always the first to speak, but when she did, her words were rooted in wisdom and in Christ’s love.

World Renew leadership is lifting up Melissa’s family, her community, the West Africa Ministry Team, and all staff, partners, and communities who were touched by her life and service. We ask the wider community for your prayers; for God’s abiding presence among all who are grieving.

Melissa’s profound and persistent desire for justice had a profound impact on our team and on the world, by the grace of God. We are grateful for the time we spent with her and for the way that she helped us all reflect Christ more clearly.
