Escalating Violence and Displacement
Gang violence in Haiti has intensified in recent years and surged following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry in late April 2024. Despite the appointment of an interim prime minister, armed groups have continued attacks in the capital, Port-au-Prince, burning homes and exchanging gunfire with police. By early May, an estimated 90,000 people had fled the violence, with numbers continuing to rise amid ongoing insecurity.
Displaced families are seeking refuge in overcrowded shelters, where conditions are increasingly difficult. Torrential rainfall has added to the challenges, making it harder for families to access food, clean water, and essential health care.
Responding to Urgent Needs
World Renew Haiti is supporting the work of trusted network peers and local partners as they respond to the growing humanitarian crisis in Port-au-Prince and nearby Kenscoff. Following careful assessments, partners are providing cash transfers to help families meet their most immediate food needs. They are also distributing hygiene kits, safe drinking water, water purification tablets, and other essential supplies—not only to displaced people, but also to host families who are offering shelter despite their own financial constraints.
Recognizing the deep emotional toll of this crisis, partners are working to recruit mental health professionals to provide psychological support. This includes specialized training in trauma care and targeted interventions for those most severely affected, especially children who have experienced significant distress.
Hope Amid Ongoing Challenges
While the situation remains complex and uncertain, World Renew continues to place its trust in God’s provision and care. Local partners, based in Port-au-Prince, are maintaining program activities as security conditions allow, and teams are closely monitoring developments to respond effectively to emerging needs.
We ask for continued prayer for wisdom, protection, and strength for our partners, network peers, and staff as they serve communities affected by this crisis. Together, we remain committed to extending compassion, resilience, and hope to the people of Haiti.
