Haiti Crisis Response Amid Escalating Violence

The gang violence that had been plaguing Haiti for several years escalated following the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry in April 2024. Despite the appointment of interim leadership, armed groups continued to launch attacks in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, burning homes and exchanging gunfire with police.

As of May 2024, an estimated 90,000 people had fled the violence in Port-au-Prince (OCHA). Families seeking safety in overcrowded shelters face significant challenges in accessing food, clean water, health care, and other essential services. Heavy rainfall and ongoing insecurity further compound the difficulties facing displaced communities.

Supporting Displaced Families in Haiti

World Renew Haiti asks for prayers as we support the work of local partners and peer organizations within our humanitarian networks to offer Christ’s hope to people displaced by violence in Port-au-Prince and nearby Kenscoff.

Working closely with partner organizations, emergency assistance includes cash transfers to help families meet immediate food needs, along with hygiene kits, safe drinking water, water purification tablets, and other essential supplies.

Support also extends to host families who open their homes to displaced neighbours despite facing significant financial hardship themselves. As the crisis continues, both displaced families and host communities experience growing strain on already limited resources.

Families endure unimaginable trauma as a result of violence and displacement. In response, humanitarian partners work to recruit mental health professionals and provide trauma-informed support, particularly for children and others most severely affected by the crisis. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, World Renew is able to commit funding to help sustain these critical efforts.

Although the situation remains challenging, World Renew continues to stand alongside the people of Haiti through local partnerships and community-based response efforts. While security concerns affect operations in and around Port-au-Prince, local partners remain committed to serving vulnerable communities whenever conditions allow.

Responding to Crises with Hope

The Haiti crisis response situation remains complex, and families continue to face the effects of violence, displacement, food insecurity, and limited access to essential services.

World Renew asks for your continued prayers for the people of Haiti, especially children and families who have experienced trauma and uncertainty. Please also pray for wisdom for community leaders, peace throughout the country, and protection for staff, local partners, and humanitarian organizations working to support those affected by the crisis.

As needs continue to evolve, World Renew remains committed to walking alongside vulnerable communities like Haiti in times of disaster and conflict. Through our International Disaster Response work, we support local partners and humanitarian networks as they provide emergency assistance, recovery support, and hope to people facing crises around the world.
