After witnessing the worst-hit regions of the flood-ravaged country, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reported, “I have seen many humanitarian disasters in the world, but I have never seen climate carnage on this scale. I have simply no words to describe what I have seen here in Pakistan.”
Since the monsoon season began in mid-June 2022, Pakistan has experienced roughly three times more rainfall than the national 30-year average. The unprecedented rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides, impacting more than 33 million people across the country, with effects continuing long after the waters receded.
The Scale of the Crisis
The flooding affected all corners of Pakistan, overwhelming communities, infrastructure, and livelihoods. At the height of the crisis, a third of the country was underwater. While assessments continue, reported impacts included:
- More than 1,300 lives lost and over 12,500 people injured
- Over 5,000 kilometres of roads damaged and more than 240 bridges destroyed
- More than 3.6 million acres of crops ruined
- Approximately 750,000 livestock lost
- Damage to or destruction of at least 1.4 million homes
The economic toll has been profound. Pakistan faced estimated losses exceeding $12.5 billion, with inflation and rising living costs intensifying hardship for families already living on the margins.
Ongoing Humanitarian Needs
Beyond physical destruction, the floods disrupted income, food production, and access to basic services. Millions of people faced food insecurity as crops and livestock were lost. Standing water and damaged sanitation systems heightened the risk of malaria, dengue fever, and other diseases. With large-scale displacement and limited shelter options, protection risks—including gender-based violence—also increased.
Even as immediate floodwaters subsided, recovery remains long and complex. Rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and strengthening resilience to future climate-driven disasters require sustained support and global attention.
Standing With Communities in Crisis
Crises like the Pakistan floods underscore the growing humanitarian impact of extreme weather events around the world. World Renew continues to walk alongside vulnerable communities through emergency response, recovery, and long-term resilience-building—responding wherever disasters strike.
