In World Renew Disaster Response Services’ (DRS) recovery model, staff, volunteers, and supporters are often encouraged by the power of community. After natural disasters, people rise to the occasion to support one another. Communities rally for recovery funds, help survivors rebuild, and carry their neighbours forward toward finding hope again. Laura’s story demonstrates how community support after a disaster helps survivors rebuild their homes, regain stability, and restore hope.
Laura attests to the power of community in her life after becoming a hurricane survivor. In 2024, she experienced two back-to-back hurricanes—Helene and Milton—in Manatee County, Florida. The storms damaged her condo, including the walls, floors, cabinets, and countertops. Laura was grateful to have lived through the hurricanes, but the condition of her home caused her fear and anxiety, especially since she was living alone.
As Laura nearly drained her finances to start home repairs, the hurricanes continued to impact her mental health. The headlines faded and the world seemed to move on, but Laura found herself reeling and feeling isolated. She realized she needed to find a solution. Taking a brave step, Laura sought counselling services.
Finding Help Through Hope Pathways
While working through her challenges, Laura’s counsellor directed her to Hope Pathways. This long-term recovery group in Laura’s area provides vital resources, coordinated support, and hands-on assistance to help people recover and move forward after disasters. Through Hope Pathways, Laura discovered she was not alone as she navigated the challenges of recovery.
As the organization began to connect her to resources about her recovery, Laura noticed her burdens begin to lift. She could share how she was feeling with people who understood her exact situation. Laura expressed that this experience eased the despair she felt.
During this time, friends also stepped in to Laura. One friend gave Laura new kitchen countertops, and lower cabinets were donated to her and installed. It was a relief to see progress made toward repairing her home.
Community Support After a Disaster Makes Recovery Possible
Through their partnership, Hope Pathways and World Renew DRS provided practical community support after a disaster, helping Laura move one step closer to completing her recovery.
When it was time for the finishing touches on Laura’s condo, she was connected with volunteers from World Renew DRS partnering with Hope Pathways to help Manatee County recover. Laura was glad to learn that the volunteers would install her countertops, as well as upper cabinets and pantry cabinets provided by World Renew DRS’ grant from the American Red Cross.
The volunteers worked with Laura to make the materials fit her space and her needs. After they installed the countertops and cabinets, Laura felt another step closer to recovering and healing.
“I am so thankful for another support system on this journey,” she said. “Thank you.”
Through friends, support services, and recovery organizations, Laura recognizes the power of community after a disaster. While she continues to work through her trauma, she now has more hope for the future. With a wide smile, she shared:
“I am going to heal from this and I will move on, because I am resilient.”
