Another round of severe spring storms swept across the U.S. Midwest last week, killing five people and injuring dozens more (Associated Press, 2023) Multiple tornadoes destroyed communities in Missouri and Tennessee, bringing the number of storm-related fatalities to 62 across five major weather events in the previous four weeks.
World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) is organizing a spring tornado response to help storm survivors rebuild their lives after losing their possessions, homes, and loved ones.
Spring Tornado Response Across Multiple States
World Renew DRS is coordinating efforts to meet needs in some of the hardest-hit communities in Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, where families are facing the difficult task of rebuilding damaged homes and restoring a sense of stability.
World Renew has more than 50 years of experience providing long-term, community-based disaster recovery assistance in the United States and Canada. Through local partnerships and trusted community relationships, World Renew works alongside disaster-affected families throughout the recovery process.
Long-Term Support for Tornado Survivors
Just one week before the first storm system struck Mississippi on March 11, 2023, World Renew DRS volunteer teams completed work at a reconstruction site in Hattiesburg, where the organization has been helping rebuild homes for six years following a 2017 tornado.
World Renew has long-standing relationships with organizations and local officials in affected areas, allowing the organization to respond effectively when disasters occur.
These ongoing connections include volunteers and supporting churches linked to Christian ministries in Rolling Fork and nearby Cary, Mississippi. We are grateful that World Renew DRS volunteers serving in Rolling Fork completed their work and returned home safely on March 10, 2023.
Disaster Recovery That Lasts Beyond the Headlines
World Renew DRS provides communities affected by disasters with both short-term clean-up assistance and long-term recovery support that may continue for one to three years or longer.
As local authorities complete damage assessments across the Midwest, World Renew DRS is preparing to deploy volunteers and equipment as needed. The organization specializes in assisting homeowners with limited financial resources who are unable to recover on their own. Services may include:
- Roof repair and tarping
- Tree removal
- Damage and needs assessments
- Cost estimating
- Home reconstruction and rebuilding
By focusing on long-term recovery, World Renew helps families and communities move beyond immediate disaster impacts toward lasting restoration.
Help Support Disaster Recovery Efforts
World Renew’s Disaster Response Services program works alongside local partners, churches, and volunteers to help communities recover after floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters. In addition to immediate clean-up assistance, DRS supports long-term rebuilding efforts that help vulnerable homeowners return to safe, secure housing.
