Looking Forward with Hope

In July 2020, Hurricane Hanna made landfall in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. With sustained winds of more than 90 miles per hour and intense rainfall, many families were forced into storm shelters. This devastation unfolded during a global pandemic, compounding fear and uncertainty as people navigated loss, displacement, and isolation all at once.

Among those affected were Jorge and Juanita Torres and their four children. As the hurricane tore through their neighbourhood, the family huddled in a small bedroom while powerful winds battered their home. When the storm passed, they returned to a heartbreaking scene: the roof had been torn open, windows shattered, and nearly 10 inches of rain had poured inside. Their belongings were destroyed, and doors, walls, and flooring were badly damaged—along with their sense of security and hope. Despite their efforts to clean up, the home was no longer safe to live in.

Waiting Through Compounding Loss

For the next 18 months, the Torres family lived with Jorge’s mother while waiting for repairs to begin. With travel restrictions and limited volunteer availability during COVID, progress was slow. During this already difficult time, more hardships emerged. Juanita was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and Jorge learned he had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Each new challenge added weight to a situation that already felt overwhelming, mirroring the debris left behind by the storm itself.

As the family managed ongoing uncertainty and deepening despair, a turning point finally arrived. A team of World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) volunteers arrived at their door—bringing both practical skills and compassionate care. Their presence marked the beginning of healing.

Rebuilding Together

Determined to play an active role in restoring their home, the Torres family worked alongside the DRS team throughout the rebuilding process. Together, they cleared debris, replaced flooring, painted walls and trim, completed drywall repairs, and tackled countless other tasks. Juanita and Jorge also cooked meals for the crew, turning the worksite into a place of shared effort and mutual encouragement.

Eventually, the family was able to move back into their home. More than restored walls and floors, they found renewed confidence and hope for the future. Today, three of their children are enrolled in college, and the family continues to rebuild their lives with resilience and faith.

Stories like the Torres family’s reflect the lasting impact of compassionate response after disaster—helping people move forward with hope, rather than remain defined by loss.
