World Renew is responding to the devastating flooding and landslides that have impacted communities across northern and central regions of Nepal, leaving widespread destruction and significant humanitarian needs. Through its network partners, World Renew’s Nepal flood response is helping share Christ’s hope with communities struggling with loss, displacement, and damaged infrastructure.
Nepal Flood Response and Humanitarian Needs
Search-and-rescue efforts continue across affected districts, with thousands of emergency personnel and volunteers mobilized to support evacuations and life-saving assistance. Despite these efforts, many communities remain difficult to access due to washed-out roads, damaged bridges, and ongoing landslide risks.
As of September 1, 939 people have died, 4,247 remain missing, and more than 11,000 people have been rescued. Thousands of families have been displaced or lost homes, crops, belongings, and sources of income. Schools and other community gathering spaces are gone. Hydropower facilities have also been damaged, disrupting power generation and leaving some workers trapped.
While severe monsoon rains played a significant role in the flooding, experts believe the crisis may have begun when a large collapse of ice, rock, and debris crashed into a river near the Nepal-Tibet border, unleashing a powerful surge of water downstream. Days later, water that had pooled behind the debris burst through a natural barrier, sending another wave of flooding through hard-hit areas. According to BBC News, the event underscores how changing environmental conditions in the Himalayas, including melting ice and increasingly unstable mountain landscapes, are contributing to greater risks for people living in vulnerable areas.
The United Nations says at least 93,000 people require urgent humanitarian assistance. Key concerns include access to clean water and sanitation, the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks, protection concerns for children and vulnerable people in temporary shelters, and the long-term challenges facing communities that were already coping with economic hardship and food insecurity.
The scale of the needs continues to evolve as assessments are conducted across affected communities.
