In some communities in West Africa*, areas where World Renew staff could once travel freely have become increasingly difficult to access due to growing security concerns. Even so, World Renew continues to walk alongside local partners, ensuring communities receive the training and support they need to keep moving toward their own development—regardless of changing circumstances.
Building Resilience through Local Leadership
Through Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), community members meet regularly to pool savings, plan for the future, and support one another. These gatherings also serve as opportunities for practical training in areas such as business management, conservation agriculture, and health.
Much of this work is led by Group Advisors—local community members trained by World Renew and its partner, SEL. Advisors share knowledge in areas such as agriculture, income generation, health, and family responsibilities. In some Christian communities, they also lead times of prayer.
Practical Solutions in Uncertain Times
In one region, Group Advisors focusing on family responsibilities highlighted the growing importance of identification documents, particularly as authorities became more vigilant in requiring proper identification.
“Every time I brought my wife for medical treatment or to the market, I had to pay a 2000f fine ($4.47 CAD) for not having our paperwork,” shares Ibrahim*, a VSLA member. “The day we wanted to go to the city and we didn’t have the 2000f, we had to leave the paved road and continue through the bush, which is very risky. The director of the school threatened my son to bring a copy of his father’s nationality paper…or he would risk being kicked out of school, and I did not have the documents.”
With encouragement and guidance from a Group Advisor, Ibrahim took action.
“Thanks to the advice from the Advisor, I completed ID cards, family books, birth certificates, and nationality documents for my wife and myself. Now we are at peace when we travel, and our children are no longer threatened to be kicked out of school.”
A Steady Presence of Hope
Even as challenges persist, local leadership and community-based approaches continue to make a meaningful difference. World Renew remains grateful for the opportunity to support these efforts—sharing hope and practical care in the midst of uncertainty.
