Madagascar: Working Together to Share Hope

World Renew’s Executive Director, Jamie McIntosh, recently visited southern Madagascar with Cheryl Weber, host of 100 Huntley Street. Although the dry season had only just begun, the air was already thick with dust, and rivers that once ran strong had dwindled to shallow trickles. The region continues to face one of the most severe droughts in decades.

In Madagascar, most families rely on farming to survive. But when the rains fail, crops cannot grow in the dry, depleted soil. Many households are left struggling to find enough food. While hardy plants like cactus and cassava can sometimes endure these conditions, they are not enough to provide full nutrition.

During their visit, Jamie and Cheryl met children showing clear signs of acute malnutrition — frail bodies, distended stomachs, and brittle hair — a sobering reminder of the toll food insecurity takes.

Resilience Rooted in Faith and Community

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 reminds us of the strength found in community:

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

This spirit of partnership and care is evident in Madagascar. Despite immense challenges, the people Jamie and Cheryl met showed remarkable resilience. They are not seeking handouts, but opportunities — hope for a future where they can sustain themselves and their families.

Local leaders like Torognasie play a vital role. A mother of eight and a respected community leader in the village of Atomba, she helps ensure that the most vulnerable households are supported. “I keep my faith in God even when the situation is bad,” she says. “We think God sent World Renew to help.”

Sharing Hope Through Practical Support

In response to ongoing drought and food insecurity, World Renew works alongside local partners to support families with essential food assistance and resources. Emergency food distributions — including staples like rice, beans, and cooking oil — help households weather the most difficult seasons. These supports not only meet immediate needs but also help families regain strength and stability.

Through these efforts, hope is shared in tangible ways. Families are better equipped to endure hardship today while building resilience for tomorrow.
