World Renew recognizes that healthy families help build strong communities. In Houaylai and neighbouring Nanoy—remote villages in Laos—families rely on what they grow, gather, fish, and hunt to survive. At times, diets can be limited, and access to clean water and proper sanitation is a challenge, contributing to health concerns. With travel to medical care often difficult, addressing health issues at the village level is essential.
World Renew works alongside community members to explore how health is affected by factors such as mosquito breeding areas, open defecation, waste disposal, and water availability. Together, villagers are taking steps to reduce stagnant water, clear overgrown areas to let in sunlight, and limit the spread of pests and disease. Families are using mosquito nets, and children are learning about handwashing and other important hygiene practices.
As awareness has grown, villagers have seen the connection between sanitation and health—and they are committed to change. Community-led clean-up efforts have sparked strong interest in building latrines. What began with just a few families contributing labour and resources has gradually expanded, as others have seen the benefits firsthand. With technical guidance and local effort, more households are improving sanitation, and these changes are already leading to noticeable improvements in health.
World Renew also encourages families to seek care at health centres and to access available medical support. Efforts include promoting prenatal care, supporting community-based health checkups, and helping ensure that children receive essential vaccinations. Families facing additional challenges—including those with limited income or living with disabilities—are also supported through inclusive initiatives such as access to education and tailored assistance.
Through collaboration, learning, and practical action, communities in Laos are taking meaningful steps toward healthier futures.
